Primary School Curriculum: Junior
At Emirates International School (EIS) we aim to provide a broad international education
that promotes excellence in all academic activities. Textbooks and learning programmes
are carefully chosen to accommodate and stimulate children of all abilities. The
curriculum consists of the following learning areas:
English
Throughout the Primary School we use the Collins English Scheme. This
covers the dynamics of the language; punctuation, spelling and grammar, as well
as the creative aspects like poetry and story writing.
Collins "Focus on Literacy" is used as part of the reading programme. A selection
of textbooks from modern and traditional fiction acts as a springboard for independent
reading. EIS follows a Guided Reading Programme which gives the student the opportunity
to take part in discussions around the reading text.
Mathematics
The Mathematics work is based around the Heinemann Maths Scheme. Mental Maths is
practiced daily. Regular check ups ensure that each student's progress is carefully
monitored.
International Primary Curriculum (IPC)
At EIS we follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The programme is currently
taught in schools all over the world, with the curriculum goal to develop an international
mindset in students. It is an integrated program which covers Geography, History,
Science, Art and Craft, Technology, Music and PE (where appropriate).
Arabic
Native Arabic speakers follow the curriculum prescribed by the Ministry of Education
(Arabic A). Foreign language students (Arabic B) have different levels of Arabic.
Islamic
We follow the Ministry of Education guidelines using the Ministry Books.
French
This subject is optional for Gr 5 and 6 students. There are two French levels running
at the same time. Foundation Level and the Advanced Level. Foundation Level is for
students who have not studied French before and the Advanced Level is for students
who speak French or have studied French before.
Art and Craft
Along with an aesthetic awareness of the elements and principles involved, we aim
to develop an enthusiasm for the study of art and it's meaning in history and cultures.
Music
The students will have the opportunity to develop singing, instrumental, listening
and improvising skills.
ICT
The aim of the programme is to prepare the students for a rapidly changing world
where activities are increasingly transformed through access to ICT. We offer a
range of tasks using a variety of ICT tools.
Physical Education
The PE programme has been developed to help our students' confidence and self-esteem.
This is achieved by providing the students with a challenging and diverse programme
that develops their social and physical skills.
English Second language (ESL)
English as a second language is taught in small groups to children who come to EIS
with little or no English. These lessons take place every day until it is felt the
child no longer requires an intensive ESL programme.
Learning Support (LS)
The Learning Support programme provides an assessment and instruction programme
tailored to the needs of individual children when required.
