High School Curriculum: Evaluation System
EIS – Jumeirah students are monitored on a regular basis to ensure they are progressing
to the best of their ability.
Every teacher uses a formative approach to assess each student as an individual.
This ensures any difficulties are addressed immediately and corrective feedback
is given to remedy any misunderstanding. During each lesson or by use of plenary
students are encouraged to reflect upon what they have learned and the approach
by which they learned it.
Homework and assessment grades are recorded according to the school’s Academic guidelines
and recommendations – this typically demands the recording of one criterion based
assessment per week. Each teacher is responsible for maintaining these records.
Written feedback is also provided to support student improvement and identify target
areas for improvement. The homework diary is used to ensure parents are aware of
assignments and any resulting difficulties.
On completion of any unit of work students are asked to reflect upon their progress.
A self evaluation form is completed by each student and is used to focus preparation
for end of unit assessments. Unit completion assessments are used within departments
at various stages of the academic year. The results of these assessments are recorded
centrally by the head of department. The Head of Department uses this information
to monitor student progress and to identify whether students are achieving success
in the subject. Academic coordinators use this data to assess achievement and progress
by students across the full curriculum.
Students who are underachieving in their academic studies are placed on academic
probation. This involves a weekly report card to be completed by all subject teachers
and a daily meeting with the relevant academic coordinator. The student, parents
and coordinator will discuss and agree upon strategies for improvement at this stage.
Mid-year and end of year examinations are one component of the evaluation system
within EIS – Jumeirah. These are of a summative nature, covering all work to date,
and are graded according to a seven point score (1 is lowest to 7 highest).
