High School: Student Welfare
The High School operates a House system throughout Grades 7 to 13 which is the heart
of the High School. The vision for the House system is to foster a sense of belonging,
creating an identity and establishing tradition within the EIS-J High School community.
The design of the House system is to encourage better cooperation and competition
between students and to create a supportive "family" environment for students in
all grades.
There are four Houses. Each has its own Head of House who is responsible for the
welfare of all students in the House.
The four Houses are:
The names selected for the Houses draw on the popular aspects of UAE culture. All
four Houses have a male and female House Captain elected by the students in each
House.
Throughout the academic year, students are involved in House and inter-House activities
and competitions. Students earn House points by taking part in events like sport
tournaments, quizzes, debates and also for everyday actions such as holding a door
open for a teacher or displaying good manners and behaviour. The Dean of Students
ensures that all students compete for House trophies and certificates in a spirit
of cooperation and fair competition. All High School staff and students (Grades
7-13) are allocated to a House.
Each student belongs to a Form Class and registers each morning with their Form
Teacher. In Grades 7 to 11 we have six Form Classes in each grade and four in Grades
12 and 13. Alongside registration, students meet with their Form Class in a welfare
lesson once a week. In these lessons students address issues such as study skills,
life skills, community service and internationalism coupled with a close review
of their academic progress. Grade assemblies also take place on a rotational basis
during these lessons. Each grade has a member of staff designated as "Head of Grade"
who is responsible for the welfare of all students in their grade.

This is the third year of the Student Representative Council (SRC) in the High School

and values of the High School are inculcated into the student body. Through this
experience, students learn about the process of holding a general election. The
Head Girl and Boy sit on the SRC.

DEVELOPMENTAL GUIDANCE (School Counsellor)
High school years are full of growth, promise, excitement, frustration, disappointment
and hope. It is the time when students begin to discover what the future holds for
them. The High School Counsellor's role is to enhance the learning process and promote
academic achievement. School counselling programmes are essential for students to
achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set
appropriate career goals and realise full academic potential to become productive,
contributing members of the world community.
To develop the whole student, it is important to consider the skills students need
to improve themselves and the environment where these skills are to be used. Students
need to integrate information with self-knowledge and develop skills to help them
plan, make decisions, and adjust to the complex world in which they live.
As students achieve developmental competencies, their perceptions of themselves
will become more positive. Students who successfully acquire skills and information
early in their lives will have more resources to help them continue to develop and,
consequently, they are more likely to acquire favorable attitudes about themselves
and their life options.
Developmental guidance is a process of leading, directing, and advising students
through a program of experiences which provides information, support, instruction,
and encouragement to assist in developing personal/social, educational, and career
skills. Personal/social, educational, and career development skills represent the
domains that developmental guidance is organized around.
Developmental guidance outline is provided for the high school students from Grades
7 through Grade 13. This mission will be accomplished through the constant support
of the stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help the student
achieve success in school.
